Do I Need A Tooth Extraction?

Several conditions can necessitate tooth extraction. You may need a tooth extraction if you experience one of the following:

  • Dental trauma may result in severely fractured or loosened teeth that must be removed.
  • Tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems can cause damage or infections. If the tooth can’t be repaired, it must be removed to prevent further infection.
  • If you’re receiving orthodontic treatment, your dentist may recommend removing extraneous or crowded teeth to help make it easier to straighten your teeth.

When it’s no longer possible to save or restore your teeth, our dentist will perform an extraction.

Do I Need A Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars that come in. They typically erupt between the ages of 17-25. If your wisdom teeth become impacted and cause problems with your surrounding teeth, your dentist may recommend removing one or more. Impacted teeth can cause toothaches, gum infections, and damage. Extraction can provide relief and improve your overall oral health.

What Can I Expect During A Tooth Extraction?

  1. First, our team will take an X-ray or 3D scan to assess the condition of your tooth, gums, and surrounding jaw tissue. If our dentist determines extraction is necessary, we will schedule your procedure as soon as possible.
  2. During your extraction, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb your tooth. Local anesthesia will reduce any potential pressure or discomfort. We also offer dental sedation to help you relax and put your mind at ease.
  3. Next, your dentist will use forceps to remove your tooth. For an impacted wisdom tooth, the surrounding gum and bone tissue will need to be cut and removed so the doctor can reach the tooth. If the tooth is difficult to remove, your dentist will cut the tooth into pieces and pull them out one at a time.
  4. Once the tooth has been removed, your dentist will give you a piece of gauze to bite down on. This will help a blood clot form in the socket and promote a healthy recovery.
